Poetry

Independent Walker

Jonah began walking.
I will never forget.
He became an independent walker
November 3, 2010 at a skating party at Idyl-Wyld.

Jonah wanted to try skating;
it was short lived.
He slid off the bench,
slowly making his way to the rink.
I watched in disbelief.

He walked slowly yet unfalteringly to the arcade.
I dodged skaters, following him with tears in my eyes,
as he made his way around the rink.

No walker.
No hands.
Independent for the first time.

In an attempt to encourage my students in their poetry writing, I wrote this poem to share with them.
