Hearing Aids

In March Jonah had a sedated ABR that told us for sure that Jonah has profound hearing loss in both ears. We were able to schedule an appointment with an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor at St. Vincent to discuss our options for cochlear implants. We were encouraged to see an audiologist outside of St. Vincent to get the hearing aid process started quicker. For insurance purposes, we had to try hearing aids first and prove that they didn't work before going to cochlear implants. On May 11, 2012 Jonah began a three month trial of hearing aids. We saw an audiologist at the Speech and Language Clinic at Ball State who was willing to take on Jonah's case and work with St. Vincent.

This is the day Jonah started really walking on his own. Since then, Jonah has learned to run, jump, ride a bike and suck through a straw. We are blessed by the improvements that Jonah continues to make.

Poetry

Independent Walker

Jonah began walking.
I will never forget.
He became an independent walker
November 3, 2010 at a skating party at Idyl-Wyld.

Jonah wanted to try skating;
it was short lived.
He slid off the bench,
slowly making his way to the rink.
I watched in disbelief.

He walked slowly yet unfalteringly to the arcade.
I dodged skaters, following him with tears in my eyes,
as he made his way around the rink.

No walker.
No hands.
Independent for the first time.

In an attempt to encourage my students in their poetry writing, I wrote this poem to share with them.

Growing Up!

Jonah and Bailee are both getting so big! Jonah has fully adjusted to being back in school. He started back right away without any tears. We are working on listening a little better right now. It’s hard for him because he isn’t always aware that someone is talking to him. Maturity will make a big difference in that skill.

We tried Bailee in the Jumperoo this weekend and she loved it! She was content to sit in it for quite awhile. She was smiling and laughing at the jungle animals. Jonah kept trying to show her how to jump in it and how to make the toys move. He can be such a great big brother!
